The London Design Festival, which includes dozens of events scattered throughout London in September, features different souls, represented by different events that, over time, became important even independently, thus distinguishing themselves from each other, for exhibition style and product types.
Designjunction, the event changing venue every two years or so, is a good example of one of these souls. It mixes some well-established and emerging international brands, with young designers and schools, self-productions, small productions, which share the same idea of research, materials, innovation and respect for the environment.
In the Designjunction 2018 edition, which was held among Oxo Tower, Doon Street, and with several installations in South Bank, from 20 to 23 September, several brands gained attention for the focus on the environment and the research on materials. Examples of organic design include the organic design chair Design # 1 by Revology, in resin with linen fibres and recycled brass, a contemporary version of Thonet No. 14, or the “Bistrot” chair, the Karbon chair by Actiu, which adopts carbon fibre both for its lightness and for its decorative capacity, and the Chips lounge chair by Lucie Koldova for Ton, a modern vision of hand-curved wood, lightened by a mesh backrest with comfortable padding.
Oxo Tower also hosted the Rado Star Prize UK 2018 exhibition, which selected and awarded projects and products by young British designers with the criteria of innovation and research into materials and functions, including a portable Wi-Fi floor lamp by Lewis Small, a memory stick turned into a jewel by Aaron Smith, or limescale incrustations creating materials for new products, in Martina Taranto’s research.
