Its name is The Student Hotel, but it is much more than a hostel or a hotel: it is a philosophy of life, a wind of innovation that sweeps away old models and opens the way to a living concept that is emerging as the Millennials and digital natives reach the age to live alone. After all, it is already in their claim: “May the student in you never die”, where the student becomes a category of the spirit, no longer a phase of transition to adulthood and work, but a mental state.
The Student Hotel is a concept of hybrid hospitality, offering students a nice room, in an environment with all the comforts; to tourists and travelers, it offers rooms of various sizes and rates; and to professionals, it offers temporary accommodation, for medium duration stays. It cannot be denied that it is not a cheap accommodation for students, but the philosophy of The Student Hotel is that the stay cannot exceed 10 months: the structure is certainly an accommodation, but with the spirit of a community, a place where a young person at the beginning of his studies can stay in an environment like (or better than) home, which helps him to fit into his new reality.
The area hotel for tourists has all the comforts of a 4-star hotel, with swimming pool and gym, but in an informal and relaxed, with apparently spartan but actually quite comfortable furnishings, with windows overlooking the Fortezza da Basso and Brunelleschi’s Dome (because some visual candy is surely needed).
Founded by Charlie MacGregor, participated by several investment funds, The Student Hotel is a business model integrating the demands for tourist hospitality with the needs of those who move for work or study, and the needs of those looking for workstations equipped with all the equipment, shared to contain costs. The Student Hotel is all this in a welcoming and colourful atmosphere.
The first Italian structure, The Student Hotel Florence Lavagnini, which officially opens on July 1, 2018, is located in Florence city centre, in the building nicknamed “Palazzo del Sonno”, in a central area, 10 minutes walk from Santa Maria Novella Station, the University, and 15 from Piazza del Duomo. The project was developed by Archea Associati, a Florence-based architectural studio, together with Rizoma Architetture, from Bologna, for the interior design, and the collaboration of a team of the interior design group.
Furniture is the exact expression of design as the Millennials might understand it, and how of course a large structure must interpret it, which has a budget to make up, while respecting an overall image. In this venue in Florence, the first in Italy, the Made in Italy design is well represented, with chairs by Pedrali in the common areas, tapware by Nobili in the rooms, and, just like a young Millennial would do, a few valuable pieces here and there, like a Cactus by Gufram in its white version in the lobby.
Last but not least, some economic data. At a time when Italy is seen as a rather decadent place, which seems to have lost its enamel and attractiveness, The Student Hotel has instead planned huge investments in our country for the next few years – between 600 and 700 million Euros – for the opening of 5 new venues, between Florence, Bologna and Rome. Currently, the group has ownership in 11 locations, Florence Lavagnini, Rotterdam, two locations in Amsterdam, Den Haag, Groningen, Eindhoven, Maastricht and Paris and two locations of the TSH Campus in Barcellona, rjust for students. In 2018, a new opening is scheduled in Dresden, in 2019 the openings are scheduled for Bologna, Madrid, Berlin and Delft, in 2020 Paris, Porto, Rome, Florence Belfiore and Vienna, Carcavelos Lisbon, Toulouse, Florence Manifattura Tabacchi and Barcelona in 2021. Milan is not scheduled for the moment, because, with all the development projects that are already underway in Milan, it is not easy to find a suitable location, but on the other hand the group plans to expand around the world.
